Nationalism and the Sabbath

Man for the Sabbath? Or the Sabbath for Man? This speaks volumes to so many areas of life in society today. The first thing that comes to my mind is nationalists.

So many are concerned with losing their national identity and have become so violent in protecting (worshipping) it, blinded to the fact that they are hurting and not serving their nation.

It is impossible for man to love (let alone serve) his fellow man without the love of God. God invites us to Himself first and then sends us out to serve ALL nations. National identity is supposed to be the natural expression of that life, NOT something we preserve and preach and make the object of our service, for our self-gratification or “national pride”.

The next thing that comes to mind is family. But that’s for another post...

“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27-28)
